Seeing random pop-up ads, banner ads, or full-screen ads on your Android Smart TV can be very frustrating. Many users using Mi Xiaomi TV, TCL TV, Sony TV, Vu TV, Realme TV, and OnePlus TV often experience ads appearing on the home screen or inside apps because these TVs run on Android TV or Google TV, where certain apps and system services may display promotional content. Ads can appear due to ad personalization settings, sponsored channels on the home screen, recently installed apps, or apps with special permissions like “Display Over Other Apps.”
The good news is that you can easily reduce or completely stop most unwanted ads by adjusting a few settings on your TV.
Disable Ads Personalization (Reset Advertising ID)
Android TV and Google TV use a Google Advertising ID to show personalized ads based on your activity. Resetting or disabling this option can significantly reduce ads.
Open Settings on your Android Smart TV
Go to Device Preferences
Open Privacy
Select Ads
Turn ON Opt out of Ads Personalization
Select Reset Advertising ID
Confirm the reset
After resetting the advertising ID, apps will not be able to track your activity for personalized ads.
Remove Sponsored Channels from Customize Channels
Android TV and Google TV home screens often show sponsored channels or promotional recommendations, which appear like ads. Removing these channels helps clean up the home screen.
Press the Home button on the remote
Scroll down to the Customize Channels option on the home screen
Open Customize Channels
Turn OFF channels that show Sponsored Content or App Recommendations
Disable channels from apps that display promotional content
After disabling these channels, many promotional ads will disappear from the home screen.
Disable “Display Over Other Apps” Permission
Many apps use the Display Over Other Apps permission to show ads on top of other screens. This is one of the main reasons for sudden pop-up ads or full-screen ads.
Open Settings
Go to Apps
Open Special App Access
Select Display Over Other Apps
Review the apps list and disable this permission for apps that do not need it
If an unknown or suspicious app has this permission enabled, turning it off will stop many popup ads immediately.
Check and Remove Harmful Apps Using Google Play Protect
Some apps installed from the Play Store may contain aggressive ad services. Google provides Play Protect to detect harmful apps.
Open Google Play Store
Select your Profile Icon
Open Play Protect
Tap Scan
If any risky apps are detected, uninstall them immediately
Uninstall Recently Installed Apps (Most Common Cause)
In many cases, full-screen ads start appearing after installing a new app such as a free video player, file manager, cleaner app, or unknown streaming app.
Open Settings
Go to Apps
Open See All Apps
Check the list of Recently Installed Apps
Uninstall any app you do not recognize or no longer use
Removing suspicious apps is often the fastest way to stop unwanted ads.
Reset Advertising ID Again if Ads Continue
Resetting the advertising ID again removes tracking data used by apps to show targeted ads.
Open Settings
Go to Device Preferences
Open Privacy
Select Ads
Choose Reset Advertising ID
Identify the App Showing Ads from Notification
If a full-screen ad suddenly appears, Android TV sometimes allows you to identify which app is responsible.
When the ad appears press the Home button or minimize the ad
Open the Recent Apps screen
Select the ad screen
Tap the three-dot menu
Open App Info
This will show which app generated the ad so you can uninstall it.
Important Tip
If your Android Smart TV suddenly starts showing ads everywhere, the cause is usually a recently installed third-party app, not the TV itself. Always install apps only from trusted developers in the Google Play Store and avoid installing unknown cleaner or streaming apps.
By following these methods, you can easily stop unwanted ads on Android Smart TV and Google TV, including TVs from Mi Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, Vu, Realme, and OnePlus, and enjoy a cleaner and smoother smart TV experience.
